Effortless Curls

You know how you see those people that walk around with perfect hair all the time, and you wonder how the heck do they have such perfect hair, AND-more importantly-how do they have time to do their hair like that every day?! Ya, I had all these same thoughts, and more.. So, I decided to do my own research, so I too could have luscious locks everyday!

I asked for hair stylists’ tips, researched products and tools, and started testing them out for myself. During my experimenting, I gave myself burns, fried my hair, and rocked some crazy do’s before finally perfecting the effortless, voluminous, beachy curls, that I now style every day in under 5 minutes! That’s right! NO lie. I’m pretty proud of that accomplishment, because I need a quick routine with a little one, without looking like I just rolled out of bed!

First, in order to have great hair, you have to have the right tools. Trying to cut corners on tools/products never works. Trust me! I’ve tried..and failed. That being said, you don’t have to have the fanciest, top-of-the-line products, but knowing what works well and works for your hair will not only give you the look you’re longing for, but it will also be good for the health of your hair.

The weapons of choice:

  • 1in Hot Tools Gold Barrel Curling Iron, which you can find here. Now on sale!!
  • Sephora Boar Teasing Comb, which you can find here.
  • Hot Tools Pink Titanium 1-3/4″ Mixed Bristles Round Brush, which you can find here.

I love mixed bristle/boar bristle brushes, because they help provide volume! I also love the 1in size barrel iron, because it gives you that perfect loose wave, without too tight of a curl, while not creating too large of curls that only give body. (If that makes sense!)

The products-which, I believe are your secret weapons:

  • Style Sexy Hair 450* Protect Heat Defense Hot Tool Spray, which you can find here.
  • Wella LuxOil Reconstructive Elixir, which you can find here.
  • Farouk Royal Treatment by CHI Ultimate Control Fast Drying Volume Shaping Spray, which you can find here.
  • Batiste Dry Shampoo-I have the Blond Spray listed, which you can find here. Honestly, all of the Batiste Dry Shampoos are AMAZING, and I go back and forth between the Blonde Spray and the Original. You can find the original here, and they also have a Brunette Spray (obviously, I haven’t tried that one!), which you can find here.
  • MoroccanOil Dry Texture Spray, which you can find here.

Having these products in your hair “toolbox” are a MUST! I live and breathe by these products, and I pretty much can’t live without them!

Ok, so you know the right tools, you know the right products, but what do you do with them?

First, I start with spraying my roots with the dry shampoo. You want to spray about 6in away from your hair line, and be sure to get a good amount in there! I used to be afraid of getting too much, but in order to get the volume you want, you need a decent amount. Don’t be afraid of the chalky residue-that will subside once you scrunch it in, I promise! After spraying your roots, let it sit for 30sec before running your fingers through it, so that it can absorb any oils and soak in to the hair.

Next, section off your hair to curl. My hair takes about 3 sections-bottom, middle, and top. So, I clip up my hair from the top of my ears up, to start the first section. Once that hair is sectioned off, spray the bottom layer with the heat protecting spray. This spray will protect your hair from heat damage from the curling iron. This stuff is AWESOME! It doesn’t leave your hair crunchy, at all, it protects your locks, and it smells so good!

Then, I brush each section of hair with my round brush, as I curl it with the iron. I take the barrel and clamp the top of the hair shaft, about 2in from my face. I then curl away from my face, holding the barrel parallel to your head, and I continuously curl the hair, clamping more hair as I rotate the barrel. I always leave the bottom 1in of my hair out, so that it leaves a more “un-done” look, and I only hold the hair in the iron for about 5-10sec, before I let it spiral out of the barrel.

Once the bottom layer is curled, section off the middle, and repeat spraying, brushing, and curling that layer. Then, repeat the same steps for the top section of your hair, curling the pieces by your face last. After all the hair is curled, take the luxoil elixir, and put one drop in your hands, and run your fingers through the ends of your hair. This not only makes your hair feel incredibly soft, but it gives your hair that touchable, shiny, model-esque quality. There’s really no better way to put it! BUT, be sure to not put the oil on the roots, so that it doesn’t look greasy!! Not a good look! 😉

Next, take the dry texture spray, and spray thoroughly throughout your hair-lifting various pieces and sections, while “fluffing” up your hair. This stuff is seriously GOLD! It takes your hair from good to GREAT in seconds! It gives your hair texture and volume, and makes your hair appear fuller, longer, fluffier, and basically just AMAZING! Oh, and it smells INCREDIBLE! I can’t say enough good things about this stuff!!

Then, I take my teasing comb, and I tease the front, middle pieces of my hair. I take the skinny handle and lift up the front of my hair (where bangs would be, if I had them) and I tease the hair close to my roots. I section off 2 more pieces right behind that hair, and I repeat those steps. After teasing, be sure to smooth out the hair a bit, so that it looks voluminous, and not cray cray! 😉

Lastly, once my hair is all curled, fluffed out, volumized, teased, and larger than life, I flip my head over and spray my hair with the volume hair spray. This gives me extra lift at the roots! Then, I lift my head back up and see where the hair naturally wants to fall in to place, and once I let it “set,” I lightly spray the top with the hair spray to finish off the style. The crucial part about this step is to not spray too much, so that you don’t get a crunchy effect, and so that your hair moves with you and doesn’t stay stuck to your head like a helmet! No bueno! 🙂

And, voila! You’ve got big, bouncy, sexy, curls that can be dressed up or dressed down, and perfectly completes any look! Now, I know these steps sound like a lot of work, but I promise that once you get it down, it will take you no time at all!! It’s such a quick and easy part of my routine, that looks like I spent way more time than I really did. Trust me, I can’t spend 30 plus minutes on my hair. Aint nobody got time for that! 😉

Let me know if you have any questions about the products, the styling, or need a better description of the curling. I realized as I was trying to put steps in to words, it’s a lot harder to explain than it is to show! So, with that, my hope is to have a video tutorial in the near future!

Happy curling!

From my heart to yours,

    1. So sorry I’m just getting back with you!! But, mine is set at 425*–I prefer the highest heat, because my curls tend to last longer, which allows me to not have to curl as often! 🙂
